Albufeira Strip vs Old Town Nightlife: Which One Is For You?
Two scenes, ten minutes apart, completely different nights out. Here's the honest local breakdown so you pick the right one tonight — not at 1am when you're already in the wrong taxi.
The short version
- The Strip (Areias de São João): big clubs, late nights, party crowd, neon, shots, EDM and chart. Goes hardest from 1am.
- Old Town (Baixa): rooftop bars, cocktails, live music, dinner-into-drinks. Best from sundown to about 1am.
The Strip — the late, loud one
The Strip is a kilometre of back-to-back clubs and bars on Avenida Sá Carneiro. It's where stag and hen groups, 18–28 holidaymakers and serious clubbers end up. Music is mostly chart, EDM, reggaeton and commercial house, with the big rooms (think Kiss, Liberto's, Le Club) only filling properly after 1am and running until 6am.
Drinks are cheap by Western European standards — €4–6 beers, €6–8 long drinks, and shot deals everywhere before midnight. Dress code is relaxed; trainers and shorts are fine in most places.
Old Town — the pretty, civilised one
Old Town is the whitewashed historic centre around Rua Cândido dos Reis and the cliffs above Praia dos Pescadores. Rooftop terraces, cocktail bars, live acoustic and Portuguese guitar, restaurants that slide into late drinks. The crowd is wider — couples, friend groups, mid-20s through 50s.
Expect €8–12 cocktails, €4–5 wine by the glass, and properly made drinks rather than measure-free pours. It's quieter (you can talk), prettier (sea views, tiled streets) and earlier — most places wind down between midnight and 1am.

- Can't decide? Old Town for sundowners and dinner, taxi to The Strip after midnight. Best of both.
Getting between them
They're a €6–8 taxi or 25-minute downhill walk apart. Bolt works in Albufeira and is usually cheaper than flagging a taxi. After 2am, pre-book the return — the rank at the top of The Strip gets a queue.
